The arrest of Zoltan Bakonyi was announced by the PM Viktor Orban. Mr Orban also said the company would be temporarily nationalised and that those responsible for the disaster should bear the financial consequences. Eight people have so far died from the 4 October spill near Ajka in the west of the country. About 150 people were also injured after up to 700,000 cubic metres (24.7m cu ft) of toxic by-product from the production of alumina burst from a storage reservoir. The residue has covered an area of 40 sq km (15.6 sq miles) and the contamination has spread into the region's waterways. … Read ahead

Around the world, deepwater drilling keeps on keepin\u2019 on

You might think, given the size of the muck monster moving around the Gulf, that other countries would put deepwater drilling on pause, at least until they felt confident that oil companies could prevent a replay of the BP disaster off their coasts. But you’d be underestimating the power of oil addiction. … Read ahead

Was spill a necessary casualty to spur new energy policies?

Like the “shot heard ’round the world” that helped ignite the Revolutionary War, will the ever-worsening Gulf disaster ignite a more serious movement toward renewable energy and a comprehensive energy policy in Florida and the U.S.? While America continues to lead the world in energy use, it has shown no leadership in energy independence, or the development of energy resources that in the future will do less damage to our precious air, water and personal health. While Brazil, France and other countries show it can be done as they set goals and provide incentives, America waffles. Real action will be needed if we are to be a contender in the international competition for technology, jobs and energy independence. There are a host of reasons to want to end our reliance on oil. But perhaps most importantly, an energy policy for the U.S. and for Florida is critical for our national security. … Read ahead

Former BP Exec: Algae is the Fuel of the Future

CJ Warner was at the top of her game when she saw the writing on the wall. Twenty years into a glass-ceiling-busting career at BP, she had risen to the rank of Head of Global Refining for BP, making her one of the highest ranking executives in the oil industry. That was when she realized that she was running towards a dead end. “I had a slow but growing realization that the industry was maturing, the current fields were falling off in volume more quickly than anticipated, and the feats required to find new oil were becoming more and more heroic.” Prophetic words perhaps for someone who left BP a year before the Deepwater Horizon disaster, but she wasn’t so much running away from something bad as she was running towards something better. … Read ahead
